Special Characters – Alith Anar

Alith AnarAlith Anar, The Shadow King. A master of stealth and guerrilla tactics. For most people, this is one of their favorite High Elf characters, from a back-story perspective. He has been a thorn in the side of Malekith and Morathi for centuries. So, how do his rules match up with his legend?

  • Same statline as a Prince, but with +1 to Initiative
  • Hatred (Dark Elves)
  • Scout
  • 4+ Ward
  • Enemies suffer -1 To Hit when shooting at his unit
  • His unit has Swiftstride
  • Moonbow – 36″ range, Strength 7, D3 Wounds, Quick to Fire, no armour saves

Obviously, the big talking point about him is his bow. It is a very threatening weapon, especially since he has BS 7 and can Scout. Also, since he will probably end up in a unit of Shadow Warriors, that allows him to move quite quickly (although he cannot shoot the Moonbow if he marches) and still do some damage.

He is extremely vulnerable if attacked. With only a 6+ armour save and a 4+ ward save, he won’t last long. In a unit of Shadow Warriors, they will be very difficult to shoot (-1 for scouts, -1 from Alith Anar), but are very susceptible to magic missiles.

  1. Interesting. I’m not sure that I rate that bow enough that I’d shell out for a Lord to put it on the table. On the other hand, I don’t play High Elves, so perhaps I’m missing something amazing about it.

    Why can’t he march and shoot the bow if he’s with Shadow Warriors? I thought characters became Skirmishers if they join a unit with that rule.

    • Yeah, it is odd that they don’t allow him to march and shoot the bow, but there is specific text in the wording of it that he can shoot it if he moves, but not if he marches. Most likely, he would end up with Shadow Warriors and this restriction really limits the mobility of the unit that he is in.

      For me, the only reason that the bow is a big deal, is that it is one of the few ways to get Strength 7 for the High Elves (Star Dragons, Star Lance and +3 Strength sword being the only other ones that come to mind). Most of our units struggle with armour, and the Strength 7 can make a big difference against the 1+ armour saves.

      He definitely doesn’t seem to be the powerhouses that the previous special characters are, but is considerably cheaper than the other characters. Maybe this is a case of “you get what you pay for”?
